Cloud gazing is no longer an activity reserved for the outdoors thanks to these life-like, but surreal, indoor clouds created by Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde. Using a method he first developed in 2010, Smilde created “NIMBUS II”, a raincloud that hovers in an indoor space. The clouds are generated using a smoke machine, but Smilde must carefully monitor a room’s humidity and atmosphere in order to get the smoke to hang so elegantly, and with such life-like form. Backlighting is used to bring out shadows from within the cloud, to give it that look of a looming and ominous rain cloud. Smilde says his purpose was to give form to “physical presence found within transitional space.

Light Show of the Day: Pro-snowboarder William Hughes suits up in LEDs and hits the slopes of Tignes in south-eastern France for a stunning short film by fashion photographer Jacob Sutton for luxury lifestyle site NOWNESS.

“Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I’ve done in 20 years of snowboarding,” said Hughes. “Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob’s enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights.”

Disney historian Paul F. Anderson writes:

This video is taken from some 1957 pro-stock that I’ve owned for years. The transfer was done on a Spirit DataCine (i.e. the same machine that Ken Burns uses to transfer historic footage for his PBS documentaries). The entire reel is 20 minutes. These are the best clips, none of which have ever been shown in public.

~~Move the guy closer so that Luke actually looks like he’s kicking him.~~ C’MON PEOPLE. OUTSIDE THE BOX HERE.

Make Luke’s foot bigger. And, the guy explodes.

Change the guy into an elaborately detailed space-lemur thingy.

When the guy flings his blaster into the air, it hits the other guy in the head. SOUND EFFECTS TEAM: find me a comical sound effect for this, like BA-GINK or DO-BOING. Something.

Luke kicking him in the face is kind of cruel here, isn’t it? He’s not that guy. Let’s insert a close-up of fly-by Boba Fett shooting at the guy. This will explain how he’s propelled backward and we can show Luke shaking his head sadly or something.

What if one of these guys farts? Might lighten it up a bit, right?

Replace Luke with Hayden Christensen and add in time-travel subplot.
